Say could be in the hundreds (different article)

Drugged patients into cardiac arrest, so he could then resuscitate them for the glory.

Circular Economy & Recycling & e-Waste

I'll start the topic with a link dump:

This is a concept/term I've become interested in, and would like anyone to add any thoughts they've had on this.

Major road to be renamed

A bit of local news.

William Slim Drive to be renamed following Government review into place names

Quote:

After several months of reviewing place names in the ACT, William Slim Drive is set to be renamed “to ensure our public place naming does not cause ongoing hurt to Canberrans,” the ACT Government said.

Following an ACT Legislative Assembly review into place names in the ACT and in particular Haig Park and William Slim Drive, the ACT Government will rename the busy Belconnen road but Haig Park will retain its name despite its namesake’s use of questionable war tactics during the First World War.

Last year, concerns were raised about William Slim Drive which was named after Australia’s 13th Governor-General who has been accused of committing sexual abuse against children.
So what do you think? Should things be renamed if the people they were named after are discovered to have been terrible people?

Utah man threatened to shoot and decapitate multiple members of Congress

A Utah man named Scott Haven was found to have made more than 1,000 phone calls to Congresspersons in the last three years, most of them being profanity-laden rants about Democrats who criticized the president, and a few in which he made graphic threats to kill the person whose office he called.

Haven was not intimidated when his threat-calls started being transferred directly to federal agents. From the charging document:

Quote:

TAS Special Agent Anyaso spoke with the caller and, despite Special Agent Anyaso identifying himself as a Federal Law Enforcement Agent, the caller called Special Agent Anyaso a "****" several times. A few minutes into the call, the caller made the following statement: "Come arrest me! I would like to ******* beat the **** out of you for trying!" Special Agent Anyaso asked the caller if he was threatening a Federal Agent, at which point the caller stated, "What are you going to do?"
Haven was arrested.

Quote:

He was arrested Tuesday in his hometown of Kaysville, Utah, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Salt Lake City. He is charged with interstate transmission of threats to injure. State online records indicate he has no criminal history in Utah.

Haven’s court-appointed attorney, Robert Steele, did not immediately return phone and email messages seeking comment.

At his initial hearing Wednesday, a magistrate judge ordered Haven to remain jailed pending the outcome of the case, calling him a danger to the community.

New York state bans declawing

BBC News: Cat declawing - Should it be banned, and why does it happen in the US?

"New York might become the first US state to ban cat declawing.

In a bipartisan move on Tuesday, lawmakers voted to make the procedure illegal, except where it is medically necessary for the cat.

The governor, Andrew Cuomo, needs to review and sign the bill before it becomes law.

Critics say cat declawing - which involves cutting off a segment of the bone attached to the claw - is "barbaric and inhumane".

But the New York Veterinary Medical Society has argued that it should still be an option when otherwise the cat might be abandoned or put down.

Cat declawing is already illegal in many countries in Europe, including the UK, as well as Brazil, Israel, Australia and New Zealand."

One down, 49 to go...

There Will be Blood: Boston's Straight Pride Parade.

The Internet is a flutter with news of a planned "Straight Pride" parade in Boston. Most people are treating it as a joke, something that may not even happen. The more I read about the organizers and the pool of people they'll draw in the more I suspect this will be a white supremacist / skinhead rally looking to beat up people they don't like. It's currently scheduled to happen during the move-in weekend when Boston roads are choked with college students moving into their dorms.

A tl;dr summary of the organizers.

inexplicably inexplicable

I was just talking with Rincewind about an event that happened to me some years ago and I decided to share it.

I am going to preface this post by saying I do NOT believe in ghosts or the paranormal. I am sure there is a logical explanation for what is termed paranormal, even if we dont know what it is at the time.

That said, here is my story:

Between 2004 and 2007, we (my ex husband, my self, and my two kids, who were about 6 and 3 at the time) lived in base housing on Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC. The housing consisted of a standard, one story ranch style house. Two of these houses were connected but there was no access from one house to the other. They shared a wall, basically. At the time we lived in this house, the other side of it was vacant.

The house was long and narrow. The carport door opened into the kitchen. There was a long passage way from which the doors to the rooms opened. So from the furthest back bedroom door, you could see directly through the hall, diningroom, and kitchen, to the carport door. There was another door in the living room, and a sliding glass door off the diningroom (these essentially faced each other). We are from New York; I dont trust people and our house (doors and windows) was always locked tight at night.

My ex husband worked nights. he got home around 8 am, and I would get up and fix him something to eat before he went to bed.Normally I woke up when I heard him come in.

Last piece of background: I am severely near sighted and cant see clearly more than about 6 inches in front of me without my glasses.

Ok, so one morning I hear noise in the kitchen. It wakes me up. I glance at the alarm clock, its about quarter to eight. I am like, why is Eric home early?? He never came home early...in fact, he was usually late, giving report to the next shift.

I am worried so I hop out of bed. I dont grab my glasses, because I can get around the house blind and I'm in a hurry.

I step into the hallway and look towards the kitchen. I can see a figure. it looks like a man in fatigues. He's facing a rack on which we kept dry goods, and he is picking up a box that sounds like macaroni. I can hear the dry noodles. I say, Why are you home early? He doesn't say anything. He turns to face me, sets the noodles on the counter, and moves into the kitchen where I can't see him. I heard his military issue boots on the linoleum.

It isn't like eric to 1) not speak (he is a champion complainer) and 2) cook for himself, so I am already kinda weirded out, but mostly I am afraid because if Eric isn't speaking to me, that means he's giving me the silent treatment and I did something. That means a fight is coming.

Reluctantly I go to the kitchen to speak to him. Keep in mind that to go through any of the doors, he would have had to be in my line of sight.

Nobody is in the kitchen. A box of noodles is on the counter, and I am positive I didn't leave it there, because we had terrible waterbugs and they got into EVERYTHING - hence the wire racking. If I left a box of food on the counter, it would have cockroaches in it by morning. (Base maintenance said they were breeding in the empty house attached to ours, nothing they could do).

Now, I am positive I was awake because I went back to the bedroom to get my glasses, and while I was doing that my husband came home.

Like I said, I do not believe in the paranormal. But this event is inexplicable to me. I have had hallucinations while grievously ill, but I was not ill that day.

What are your inexplicable stories? Weird **** happens. Let's swap stories.
