It's a gross misdemeanor to make, sell, import a >10 round mag in Washington State as of July 1, 2022.

ISP changed my internet speed without notice or price change

I was getting 500 Mbps download speeds, very consistently. But I noticed a big difference about a week ago.

The speed test I just ran shows a download speed of 938 Mbps and Steam has been downloading stuff twice as fast as I was used to.

I guess I can get used to the new speed. :blush:

Rant about net-nanny, the naughty words thing

Not in here, but in online Scrabble.

They don't allow words like ****** (the n-word), and Dago (the d-word that ends in "o"). I'd known that.

Wtf, I just found, while playing a game (one of those very quick ones that you get to wrap up in around 5 mins) that you can't even do "Jew".

*checks: No, our net nanny lets that through, good. And "dago" too, apparently. That's good.*

I mean, wtf, the n-word and the d-word I understand, those words were designed as pejoratives. But I think that because some see "jew" as a pejorative, to therefore deem the word as just a pejorative, is kind of surrendering the word to the racist scum that use the word as such. I mean, it's a word, hey, a people, a culture religion whatever. This is, like, WRONG! (And the worst of it is, I lost the ******* game, that I was winning, because that word wasn't allowed, and I ran out of time before I could rush in another word.)







.....Okay, the rant's done its work. I'm no longer upset, not ranting any more, only thinking in a calm amused manner about the idiocy of the folks that devised the rules of the net-nanny they use there, clearly overdoing things there in a major way

Small Kindnesses in the Community

I trust this is the right section. I think this is a social issue.

With all the gloom over Ukraine, covid, inflation etc etc I thought I would open a thread about ordinary people making small but meaningful and heartwarming differences in local communities.

Today I met with the owner of a Horticulture company. I know him through work and help him provide training to his staff. He employs young disadvantaged kids and people with disabilities in his company, which has survived a difficult couple of years.

Anyway I met him at a country property which had a lot of housing units. It is a women’s refuge. I asked what he was doing and his response staggered me - “it’s our monthly community support day”, a day he volunteers his staff to maintain and clean up properties of organisations which do a social good.

Another thing I found out recently is that a neighbour runs a not-for-profit which does nothing but supply sporting boots and shoes to disadvantaged kids. She finances it through donations from major AFL football clubs. Again I was helping her with staff training, but she spent most of the time telling me stories about how sporting footwear had changed the lives of thousands of kids, and in sport obsessed Australia, this makes sense.

So how about more local heroes who make a difference without fuss or fanfare?

Skeptics in politics

Imagine Congress full of skeptics instead of the people in it now.
Do you think there is an appreciable difference in the way skeptics would do political business?

A few things come to my mind:

1) Far fewer platitudes. No more same ‘ol Toastmasters style monologues designed to make us feel warm and fuzzy inside. The closest things would be what we see in TLA. It would be almost embarrassing to speak like Joe Kennedy III on the podium, so few skeptics would do it.

2) More experimental legislation. Claims about what a piece of legislation is supposed to accomplish may be scrutinized more substantively. Lawmakers may frequently call for experimental programs or projects to evaluate the effectiveness of a proposal on a smaller scale (state, local, or a sample population) before going to the next step in the legislative process or implementing it on a larger scale.

3) Less hostile partisan conflict. Most skeptics are careful about what they say and how they say it. This creates a culture of assuming good faith in debate and therefore everyone is careful to not overextend. Skeptics may be more open to doing away with arbitrary procedural rules in parliament. Debate moves more quickly because opposing parties will know they either have something substantitive to say or they don’t.

Any other ideas?
