Next on the Apocalypse Bingo: Ancient Fox Demon

Ok, own up, who had an ancient pissed off Japanese demon on the apocalypse for 2022 too: https://www.iflscience.com/environme...plits-in-half/ :p

And even better question, now that it's seen the state of the world, is the demon gonna be trying to get back into the rock, shouting "Leet me iiiinnn!"? :p

AirTags - a stalker's dream

First of all, I'm generally speaking a fan of Apple products. I have four MacBooks and an iMac in use around the place and have been an iPhone user since the 3G.

But.

What exactly were they thinking about with the AirTag?

Late this afternoon I got a call from a very distressed daughter of mine. Her phone was telling her there had been an Unknown Device in close proximity to her since 13.15 and that her movements had been tracked.

At 13.15 she'd been waiting for the metro to take her home from lectures.

I assumed it was a tag and showed her how to make it beep, and that helped us find it, deep in a coat pocket.

So we have a situation where someone can be tagged completely unawares and against their will and are only informed about it significantly later. In this case it was more than four hours later, when she was already home. So the person who placed the tracker knows where she lives.

Apple's response to complaints about this is complacent to say the least. A new software upgrade warns users of the tags not to use them illicitly because they might be against the law in their jurisdiction. I'm sure that's going to deter people.

I am truly baffled that such a product could reach the mass market with such massive security flaws inherent in its uses.

On another note, the police were slightly less than totally uninterested in the matter when she called them.

She's going to stay at her boyfriend's place for a while because she no longer feels safe in her flat.

Cookies Cleared When Logging Out?

Is there a setting to prevent this? Kind of a pain to lose track of your postings and which threads have been read.

Edit:
Of course it all fixed itself the moment I posted this thread. Sigh.

The Problem with Higgs

I see that the most recent prior thread on the Higgs particle dates from 2018 so maybe it is time to see what's been going on recently.

I've read this article twice and am just about following it but I gather it appears that there is a problem with Higgs. It's just too light.

Crisis in Particle Physics Forces a Rethink of What Is ‘Natural’
https://www.quantamagazine.org/crisi...ural-20220301/

Quote:

At first, the community despaired. “You could feel the pessimism,” said Isabel Garcia Garcia, a particle theorist at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who was a graduate student at the time. Not only had the $10 billion proton smasher failed to answer a 40-year-old question, but the very beliefs and strategies that had long guided particle physics could no longer be trusted. People wondered more loudly than before whether the universe is simply unnatural, the product of fine-tuned mathematical cancellations. Perhaps there’s a multiverse of universes, all with randomly dialed Higgs masses and other parameters, and we find ourselves here only because our universe’s peculiar properties foster the formation of atoms, stars and planets and therefore life. This “anthropic argument,” though possibly right, is frustratingly untestable.
Progress is being made (maybe) but

Quote:

A candidate for the fundamental theory of gravity and everything else, string theory holds that all particles are, close up, little vibrating strings. Standard Model particles like photons and electrons are low-energy vibration modes of the fundamental string. But the string can wiggle more energetically as well, giving rise to an infinite spectrum of string states with ever-higher energies. The hierarchy problem, in this context, asks why corrections from these string states don’t inflate the Higgs, if there’s nothing like supersymmetry to protect it.

Any inspired guesses as to where the current research is leading? Is there a breakthrough coming or are we all completely lost? Maybe it really is turtles all the way down and there is no resolution?

Be prepared to step into the world of IR and UV scale decoupling, Nnaturalness, and EFT.

I guess TOE is still a dream. :(

Ukrainian Cat Cafe Stays Open To Care For Its 20 Residents Even During The War
Caitlin Jill Anders

“I have a small team of several close people who have been working with me for several years and have become my closest friends,” Serhii Oliinyk, owner of Cat Cafe Lviv, told The Dodo. “The cats have also gotten used to these people, who help to take care of them and who play with them when there are few guests, because our fluffy residents love people's attention.”

An A.I. system using real-life data could probably manage it.

Chile with help of IBm tried it. System called Cybersyn based on cybernetics/theory of system.

Experiment prematurely terminated by coup.

Will it? Inevitable? Russians would love your certainty.
