Is the 'Butterfly Effect' Literally True?

I have wondered for some time now, is the so-called Butterfly Effect literally true? I mean, can a butterfly flapping its wings in the Brazilian rain forest, literally affect the weather pattern miles and years away? And how does the theory of chaos (which like the Butterfly Effect, I am mainly familiar with thru television [hey, it works for me]) come into play?
