Japanese production in WW2

It is often discussed how Japan could never have hoped to keep up with US production during the war, and the results of the conflict clearly demonstrate this reality.



I am curious how much of this shortfall was based on Japanese production capacity being smaller than the US, how much of the difference was caused by a crippling lack of raw materials.



Does anyone know if this has ever been studied statistically in any meaningful way?
