Flowers blooming off season.

Just curious. This winter has been typical in terms of weather. It alternates between some freezing cold spells to heavy rain. I just went outside and was surprised to see some roses in full bloom. I can't say for a fact that it has never happened before, but having been in the area for a few years, I don't recall seeing this. What causes this?
