Laptop plugged in, battery not charging

I've got the all too common it seems "plugged in not charging" problem on my Dell Inspiron (P20T) laptop. It's out of warranty by a year.

I noticed that the battery was not lasting very long after it was charged, then last week it stopped charging. I cleaned the connectors for the battery and the AC plug. The AC power is listed as not recognized, but it still powers the laptop.

I ran all of the tests procedures recommended by the Dell website but other than the unrecognized AC adapter, everything was fine. Updating the BIOS did nothing.

I bought a new battery and AC adapter, but nothing has changed. Everything is fine as long as I use AC. But eventually the battery is going to die and the laptop will shut down as the slightest interruption of AC power.

Any suggestions other than living with the problem or using it for target practice at the rifle range? Thanks.
