Receiving Unreadable Text Messages

I have a 2g T-Mobile cell phone. About 10% of the texts I receive say it is from 2300 and that the message can not be displayed. My google-fu is unable to provide an answer. Anyone know why this is happening? Is it possible that I'm getting an image only and no text? Thanks.
