I just did a paper on Google glass and apparently the consumer version is going to be launched early next year. The controversy appears to be about an app called tag it that allows the wearer to identify strangers from social media photos. Right now it is suspended pending privacy issues but I am wondering about smart phones as I have no lack of strangers holding up their smartphones and taking pictures of me. I presume for facial recognition purposes. I understand that this software is already freely available for law enforcement and businesses. I am wondering if the suspension on this software only applies to Google glass. The company Tag It is working around it with only slightly less creepy apps. One is called Creep tag which identified supposed sex offenders and criminals and the other is Bump to bump which allows people to volunteer information about themselves to strangers. Anybody else slightly creeped out by this or have additional info to add. I am especially interested in knowing if they have smartphone facial recognition apps and the laws regarding that since I am a known camera shy space alien and have concerns about my identity being released to strangers and even law enforcement.
