Just recently, I've got a couple of unsolicited emails purportedly from people at .edu domains. The first was from a "Gretchen Goddard" from "topper.wku.edu" with a subject of "Thanks" and a message saying to get in touch for details of her project, as the second from an "Erica Michelle Bresica" from "wsu.edu" with no subject line and just the message "can i talk to you".
Now, I'm sure they're not genuine, partly because even in such short messages the grammar isn't what I'd expect from a university student actually doing a project, and partly because looking for the names reveals no connection to the universities in question. Not to mention, of course, that I've never heard of these people and there's no reason they should have heard of me.
Stranger still, neither seem to be addressed to me. The first was sent to "notice@gmail.com", and the second to "info@mediatt.org". Research seems to indicate that mediatt.org is registered to a Ashish Jangid from Curepe in Spain, but there's no more information I can find about him and I'm not sure that any more information would be useful as the other "to" address is gmail.
I could only find one example online of someone talking about receiving spam from a .edu address, but when I follow the link that is supposed to go to the article it instead takes me somewhere else.
It's easy enough to ignore, and I assume that it's the result of hacking or malware of some kind on the .edu domains/emails, I'm just curious if anybody else has encountered this or knows more about it?
