Paging Archimedes!

(Scenario: Car off the road in snow. Second car arrives to help, with a long cable.)

I've been told that if you stretch a cable tight between one vehicle and the other and push or pull on the middle of the cable you can "easily" pull the one vehicle out of the ditch.

Does this actually work and, if so, why? TIA.
