This No Idle Time movement for kids is an insane cancer where I live right now. I own a music school, and we're a part of the daily schedule for a lot of these kids. They have an impossible time creating their own lives, or (my main extra curricular concern) being in bands with their peers, or even just going to have fun at the beach or the skatepark.
Is this good for them? I imagine it could feel like a prison, but maybe they don't know any other sort of life.
I could be way wrong and I suppose it is a slight improvement upon the whole helicopter parent thing (although I often see them going hand in hand) since at least they get some outside interaction.
A lot of these kids are awesome academically, and can really help the other kids learning songs and techniques, but very few of them have the self motivation and independence needed to perform in self contained bands, and I suspect that has some later in life consequences once they leave their shelter as well.
How are things where you are?
Is this something college admissions departments encourage? I can't imagine much other reason the parents could be doing this
