So, what's the deal with monorails?

Well, I keep hearing about monorails and seeing them in just about every city building game. So my question is basically what's the advantage over a tram track? I mean, sure, it's up above the road, but you can build a rail track on a bridge too.

Mind you, I'm not arguing they're bad or anything. I'm obviously missing something, so I'm asking.
