eLance

After working in the Java/Grails world for the past ten years or so, I recently took a position at a local video game company doing .NET/C# coding. I don't particularly enjoy the platform, but it's a hella cool company to work for.

So in order to keep my other skills sharp, I thought I'd try to find some part-time freelance work. I signed up on eLance, which seems to be the main site geared for that sort of thing. I checked out the job listings - lots of general web dev work, but they seem to be mostly looking for full-timers.

But that wasn't the main thing that jumped out of me. What jumped out at me was the insanely low rates they wanted to pay. $2,000 USD a month for a full-time developer? They must be insane. And as far as I can tell these listings are aimed at American developers, not offshore companies in Romania.

So I think to myself, "maybe if I create my profile, people will contact me with the REAL projects." My rationale is that this has largely been my experience with Monster, Dice, etc; the jobs listed are a fraction of what are out there, but recruiters prefer to look for their candidates rather than the other way around.

Within a couple days, I got an invitation to submit a proposal for a Java project. The rate? $10 an hour. I didn't even respond.

Are there any freelance job sites where the listings aren't so laughable? I've gotten some in the past through basic networking ("I know a guy..."), but half the time the projects never wind up happening.

Any other devs have any luck with eLance or some other site?
