The Arizona Republic based this story on an Arizona Daily Star story. As a longtime editor I find it annoying beyond words that this story makes no mention of whether his claim is accurate or inaccurate. It's possible the Star story addresses this issue, in which case the Republic did a lousy editing job.
At the very least a story like this needs a line saying, "It was not immediately possible to confirm the claim." It tells readers that editors are aware of a hole, and are trying to fill it. I'm dismayed to see that standard disappear.

ETA: Nope, the Star posted it 22 hours ago and this claim is just hanging there.
