Why are beards so uncomfortable for some people?

I have a thick heavy snow white beard and I wish I could grow it out if for no other reason than to see how I'd look.



I can't grow one though because a three day growth of beard is so itchy and uncomfortable it keeps me awake. Why? There was a reason to have a beard during the iceage. Why do whiskers bother so many people?
