Pavement Comets

What are these things I've seen on pavement all my life?



These "pavement comets" always seem to have tails pointing in the same direction and a central disturbance that looks like an inclusion in the paving material went kablooey. They also always have the same color.



Any ideas what they are and how it occurs?
