Tell me about eyeglasses.

Prices for prescription eyeglasses vary enormously. You can easily spend $500 for a pair of single-vision glasses (not bifocals, not a weird prescription) at a boutique optician, less than $100 at discount chains like For Eyes, America's Best and, more recently, Warby Parker, and less than $50 -- sometimes much less -- at online outlets. Walmart, Target and Costco also have their own discount optical operations. I'd like to believe "you get what you pay for," but I would bet that most lenses come from a handful of manufacturers, and most frames aren't made from precious metals. Assuming they are made and fitted correctly, how different are cheap glasses from the top end?
