The most recent episode of Skeptoid mentioned a 2012 scientific paper by Gilles-Eric Seralini falsely linking genetically modified corn with cancer in rats did for GMOs what Wakefield did for the MMR vaccine. I think I remember my mom, who's anti-GMO, telling me about that study when it came out (probably before it was found to be fraudulent. I think, trying to be the skeptic, I said trials on rats didn't necessarily reflect effects on humans and more studies were needed. I think I was/am as much or more plain anti- antiGMO than I was a "true skeptic" who looked closely at every claim because I honestly don't want to thoroughly investigate every anti-GMO or pro-alternative medicine or new age or doomsaying or conspiracy theorist or pseudoscience claim I get from my parents.
Anyway, it made me wonder in hindsight, how should I have reacted to the study? How did you react if you heard it at the time or how would you have reacted?
