Hello everyone,
Long time lurker who has enjoyed these forums over the last few years. I have several questions and I wasn't sure where to post them. (tried the search function, and came up with nothing)
Here goes nothing: a few days ago while surfing on the internet, I came across the following website: dilemna(dot)info
I was stunned when I read it because I've always spelled "dilemma" with an n. In researching the issue, I found that this issue has been somewhat controversial over the last few years, and that apparently a great deal of people from different backgrounds and educational levels all remember learning that the proper spelling of the word is "dilemna". I even talked to several family members, and they each specifically remember being taught in elementary school that the world is spelled "dilemna".
The catch is that no one can seem to find a single printed source that cites the correct spelling as anything other than "dilemma".
It bothers me because I'm 100% percent that that's what I learned at a young age. I can remember the teacher who taught me this, as well as the name of the textbook.
I vortexed further and found several sites that discuss this kind of phenomena. The links are (in case anyone is interested)
The Mandela effect
As far as specific questions that I have, I'm not even sure where to begin since this is driving me insane. How is it possible for a large group of people to develop a false memory of something as small and mundane as the spelling of a word? FTR, I'm also in the group of people who remembers the name of the books being "Berenstein Bears", although in all the other aspects listed in the Mandela effect, I remember what is the "official" history.
Has anyone here ever had a clear, distinct memory of a historical event that they later discovered to be false?
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.
(edit: I'm apparently not able to post links to websites, and I'm not sure how to post about this adequately without doing so)
