A simple minded question on the expansion of the universe...

I'm told that everything is expanding away from everything else. (Dumbed down especially for me.) I'm also told that the Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda galaxy RSN.

Is there only an apparent contradiction there, or just something that I'm missing?
