I am placing this here, as this isn't about CU specifically. I am advocating every society should allow unlimited political expenditures (and, eventually, contributions) from corporations (more generically, no group of people should be excluded).
Thinking about Citizens United lately, I cannot see any negatives about the decision. Frankly, anything lobbied as a criticism is either an actual advantage, or not a problem with corporations.
1) They are doing it solely to raise profits
So are many people working for campaigns. A common refrain on progressive forums is that Republican voters vote against their own self interest (and should be making the profitable decision of voting progressive). Raising profits is a perfectly valid reason to favor one candidate over another.
2) They will affect the results
That is a good thing. If there is a message that will influence my decision, I want no man to place a barrier between me and the speaker.
3) Dark Money!
Not specifically about corporations but I can talk about this. The source of a political ad is absolutely meaningless. I know the people backing the ad either support the issue in the ad, or support/oppose the candidate the ad targets. I have the positions of the candidates to know what their policies are and who it is. Unless we are accusing politicians of having secret agendas (I really see no evidence for this).
4) Drowning out other speakers
This has nothing to do with something being an independent legal entity owned by shareholders
5) Foreign money
If foreigners want to pump money into our economy, I welcome it. If it will influence the results, we especially need that voice (see number 2).
6) They will own politicians
I had a much bigger post on this subject in a different threat. It is what really focused me on the subject. In short, this is just sour grapes. In any democratic system not every potential voter is created equal and not every campaign volunteer is created equal. A winning politician has a platform that appeals to the right campaign volunteers and the potential voters that get out to the polls. It is not a system meant for politicians to represent "everyone."
But, a lot of people here don't like it. Please drop in and share your thoughts.
