What would it take to see exoplanets directly?

The current method usually relies on the exoplanet passing directly in front of its star from our perspective, but surely the vast, vast majority of exoplanets are in orbital planes that do not pass directly in front of their sun from our perspective, heck even Venus doesn't do that most of the time (the next transit won't be until 2117).

I realize this would probably require a very powerful telescope, but is it possible?
