A nasty, tenacious piece of browser-hijacking bastardry.
The moral - just because you once downloaded some nice clean s/w on a different machine doesn't mean that it's still clean and hasn't been bundled with some crap like MyStartScreen.
So it was that I ended up spending a happy few hours trying to remove it step-by-step but failing, and ended up paying $30 for proprietary s/w. Ah well, it'll do its job on a regular schedule I suppose.
One nice touch in MSS - it comes with an uninstaller that you can run through Control Panel, but it needs a captcha to start it off and then it fails. I mean, you need that captcha to prevent a bot from failing to uninstall that bastardage don't you? :D
