I'm not particularly knowledgeable on the subject of rare birds, but I certainly appreciate and respect them. Any studies conducted on rare birds must really be a labor of love, and a study in patience... In the following article, researcher Chris Filardi likens the finding of the Guadalcanal Moustached Kingfisher to that of finding a unicorn.
This Yahoo article details how Filardi found and killed an elusive Guadalcanal Moustached Kingfisher, with the understanding that a specimen in-hand is much more valuable to science than photos or blood samples:
