Is it possible for an ordinary player to beat a chess master?

I recently mentioned two of my uncles were chess champions with shelves of trophies from various competitions and tournaments.

I mentioned I beat one of them once, as did my son once, then aged seven.

I was met with great scepticism.

What is your opinion?
