Several ideas have been presented as options for giving new purpose to the new forums, such as a MMDC (Mini Million Dollar Challenge). I think it might be a good idea to field some other ideas for additional Forum Feature possibilities. Implementing such ideas can make this a real resource, where we become the place people start looking for things.
CLEARING HOUSE / REPOSITORY OF SKEPTICAL THOUGHT: Such a Clearing House / Repository could be done in several ways, not necessarily (or even preferably) mutually exclusive:
1) On various topics, provide clear and concise arguments created by the membership. The actual discussion and debate can take place in other threads, and there could be some mechanism to nominate posts (or portions of posts) to be included in the repository;
2) On various topics, provide links to sites with clear and concise arguments from the skeptical perspective. Again, actual inclusion could be on a nomination basis that can be discussed and debated;
3) On various topics, provide a point by point rebuttal of opposing arguments;
4) On various topics that are current event or project type things, we could maintain the current state of progress, factual information gathered thus far;
5) On more futuristic type things, provide discussion of the current state, paths to future possibilities, arguments pro/con for doing it, etc. Again, this could be links or content created by members;
Really, we put in a lot of time arguing things, only for them to be lost to posterity, to be argued again. Why not keep the best of these?
Topics to be included in the repository could be expanded over time. Imagine where such a repository would be 10 years, by not doing much more than we do already.
ON-LINE DEBATES: These debates would be formal, with format to be decided. I do not envision them being live, rather thought out point / counter-point. If done well enough, we could try to attract some high-profile names. Such debates can be retained (perhaps in the Repository).
STOP!... FORUM(S)Forums dedicated to factually destroy paranormal scammers a la Robert Lancaster. With the resources (read: Smart People) here, it could address a lot of the biggest scammers. Perhaps one part for the factual information that is tightly controlled, another for questions, discussions, debate.
LIST OF SKEPTICAL EVENTS AND SITES: I know some exist in other spaces, but complete and current lists of everything including conferences, cruises, trips, talks (Including those found online), other sites, web-casts, etc. in one place would complement other ideas put forth;
*IF* there really is an issue with this forum diminishing with time, I believe these and other ideas would be useful in reversing that trend. Further, it would build a valuable resource to the skeptical and non-skeptical worlds. Perhaps most importantly, there would be a real sense of ownership by the members.
I'm sure greater minds than mine can come up with some grand ideas that are within reach. Please do so.
