Piaget Psychology: Skepticism, Cynicism and Social Development

1) How do developmental stages in cognition relate to the skepticism, cynicism and attitudes toward science?

The psychologist, Piaget, presented a cognitive model that explains how the human brain develops over the course of a lifetime. His model is often cited in studies of how children learn. It is also used to 'classify' learning styles of adults. I was wondering how 'learning' styes relate to skeptics, cynics, and emotional attitudes toward scientists.

Piaget talked about four (five?) stages in human development. The last two stages are significant with respect to classifying 'adult' learning styles. The last two stages are the maturing of concrete and formal reasoning. Some, if not most, adults stop at the maturing of concrete reasoning. A good fraction of adults go on to formal reasoning.

There may be other developmental models of cognition. However, I don't know cognitive psychology very well. I am a physicist, not a psychologist. Further, I may have a learning disability of my own with regards to social development.

Some insight into developmental psychology may help me. I have trouble teaching, especially when the student has emotional issues with the material. Further, I have had difficulty with employers who seem to process material different from me. Not to mention the heated arguments that I have on forums like this.

My conjecture is that lots of the heated conflicts involving science and math have a lot to do with what stage of cognitive development the participants have achieved. I have a strong belief in this, but I may be wrong. I would like to know if there are any social or psychological studies that relate cognitive styles to emotional issues.

The Piaget model seems to me the most relevant psychologist for this topic. However, there may be some limits to his model. Other cognitive models may be useful.

Some of the science threads in this forum make good anecdotes as to the emotional issues that science topics raise. So I would like examples brought up from this forum. However, I am concerned that this may raise emotional issues. So everybody be very polite, please, when they talk about other threads!

There is a potential the thread my go AAH (abandon all hope) on us. So I recommend all participants use restraint.
